Paediatric Zirconia Dental Crowns: Aesthetic “White Crowns” for Children

Tooth coloured crowns for baby teeth explained

When a baby tooth becomes severely decayed or damaged, restoring the tooth properly is important for a child’s comfort, chewing ability, and oral development. In these cases, we recommend full coverage crowns to protect the tooth until it naturally falls out.

In the past, most children who required full coverage restorations received stainless steel crowns. These crowns remain extremely reliable and are still widely used today.

However, many families now prefer aesthetic alternatives, especially when the affected teeth are visible when a child smiles.

One increasingly popular option in paediatric dentistry is the zirconia crownPaediatric zirconia crowns are preformed ceramic crowns made from zirconium dioxide, an extremely strong and durable material used widely in modern restorative dentistry.

These crowns are designed specifically for children’s primary (baby) teeth and provide full coverage protection when a tooth is too damaged for a filling.

Paediatric dentists may recommend zirconia crowns when:

  • A baby tooth has severe decay

  • A tooth has become structurally weakened

  • Pulp therapy has been performed

  • A tooth requires aesthetic restoration

  • Parents or patients  prefer a natural-looking alternative to metal crowns

Why Parents Choose White Crowns for Children

Natural Appearance

The most obvious advantage is aesthetics. Zirconia crowns look very similar to natural teeth and are especially popular for visible restorations.

Improved Confidence

Children can sometimes feel self-conscious about visible dental decay or metal crowns. Restoring teeth with tooth-coloured crowns can help maintain a natural smile.

Smooth Surface and Biocompatibility

Zirconia crowns have a very smooth polished surface, which may reduce plaque accumulation and is generally well tolerated by the surrounding gum tissue.

Why Specialist Paediatric Dental Care Matters

Restoring children’s teeth requires specialised expertise not only in dental techniques but also in behaviour management and child-centred care.

Zirconia crowns in particular require:

  • More elaborate tooth preparation

  • Precise clinical technique

  • Careful treatment planning

  • Effective child behaviour management

Zirconia crowns are rigid ceramic restorations and cannot be bent, trimmed, or crimped during placement.

Because of this, we must perform more extensive and precise tooth preparation to allow the crown to fit passively.

This preparation typically involves:

  • Greater circumferential tooth reduction

  • Careful tooth shaping

  • Smooth margins

  • Accurate crown selection

  • Precise cementation technique

As a result, placing zirconia crowns requires advanced clinical skill and meticulous attention to detail.

Are zirconia crowns better than stainless steel crowns?

In reality, both types of crowns have an important role in modern paediatric dentistry. Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) have been used successfully in paediatric dentistry for decades and remain one of the most reliable restorations for primary molars.

The most appropriate option depends on:

  • The location of the tooth

  • The severity of decay

  • Whether the tooth has undergone pulp therapy

  • The child’s age and cooperation

  • Bite considerations/ crowding

  • The family’s and child’s aesthetic preferences

In many cases:

  • Zirconia crowns are preferred when aesthetics are a priority, particularly for teeth showing when children are smiling or talking.

  • Stainless steel crowns are often recommended for back molar teeth (less visible), where durability and longevity are important.

In some cases, it is possible to place a stainless steel crown alongside a white zirconia crown in the same child, carefully matching function and aesthetics depending on the tooth and its clinical needs. This requires a high level of clinical skill and precise tooth preparation, ensuring both crowns sit harmoniously side by side.

At our paediatric dental clinic in London, we regularly provide both white crowns for children (zirconia crowns) and stainless steel crowns, selecting the most appropriate option based on each child’s individual needs. By combining aesthetic, tooth-coloured solutions with highly durable traditional crowns, we aim to achieve the best possible outcome for each child’s oral health, function, and confidence.
