Dr Maria Kalkani - Dental and Surgical Treatments for Children under General Anaesthesia

General Anaesthesia

Dr Maria Kalkani regularly provides dental and surgical treatments for children under General Anaesthesia both in the NHS and Private Hospital setting.

General anaesthesia can be a highly beneficial tool in paediatric dentistry for children and adolescents who have severe anxiety, special needs, or require extensive dental or surgical work.

What Is General Anaesthesia?

General anesthesia in paediatric dentistry allows for pain-free, anxiety-free treatment, especially beneficial for children with dental anxiety, special needs, or those requiring extensive procedures. It ensures safety and cooperation during complex treatments by controlling movement and reducing stress. Administered by highly trained Paediatric Anaesthetists, it enables comprehensive care in a controlled environment with thorough pre- and post-anaesthesia evaluations.

When General Anaesthesia Is Required?

General anaesthesia may be required for paediatric dentistry in circumstances where:

  • the use of local anaesthesia is either contraindicated, or inappropriate due to the presence of acute infection;

  • there has been previous failure of local anaesthesia or sedation;

  • the child is unable to cooperate with the proposed treatment due to young age, immaturity or other disability;

  • the child suffers from severe dental anxiety;

  • extensive treatment is required, such as complex extractions or uncovering of impacted teeth.

General anaesthesia for paediatric dentistry should only be administered within a hospital setting by a paediatric anaesthetist.

Serious problems are uncommon with modern anaesthetics. Most children recover quickly and are soon back to normal after their operation and anaesthetic.

What Parents of Our Patients Think

“Dr Kalkani was extremely kind, caring and thorough in explaining the surgery my 14 year old daughter needed. The surgery was well organised and planned smoothly and despite our surgical anxiety she was patient and reassuring. Special attention was paid to allay our fears no matter how minor. I would highly recommended Dr Kalkani and her paediatric team as extremely proficient, knowledgeable and gentle.
