Specialist Paediatric Dental Surgeon
Dr Maria Kalkani qualified as a dental surgeon in 2007 at the University of Thessaloniki (Greece). She then held post-graduate hospital training posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Guy’s Hospital and University College Hospital in London and District General Hospitals in South East London. From 2009 to 2013, Dr Kalkani worked as a children’s dentist in Community Dental Services across London and as a clinical lecturer to undergraduate dental students at Guy’s Hospital. She obtained a Certificate in Paediatric Dentistry from Eastman Dental Institute while completing her MFDS at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
In 2013, she was awarded the National Institute for Health Research Academic Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Dentistry and began a four-year specialist training programme in Paediatric Dentistry at Leeds Dental Institute, University of Leeds.
In 2016, Dr Kalkani successfully completed her Diploma of Membership in Paediatric Dentistry (MPaed Dent) from Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England with the surgical colleges in Edinburgh and Glasgow. She was also awarded a Master’s Degree in Clinical Dentistry with Distinction by the University of Leeds.
In 2021, Dr Kalkani completed a year-long postgraduate course in Advanced Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry.
She is a certified tongue-tie practitioner (Level 4) and a certified Diode Laser user.
Dr Kalkani is a member of the British, European and International Society of Paediatric Dentistry. She is also a member of the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD).
She has published her research in international peer-reviewed journals and has lectured nationally and internationally on subjects related to Paediatric Dentistry.
Dr Kalkani holds a part-time Associate Specialist Paediatric Dentist post at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Hospitals, where she treats children with complex medical and dental needs.
