Laser Lingual Frenotomy: Effective Tongue-Tie Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Children and Adolescents Tongue-Tie Care

Lingual frenulum restricting tongue mobility.

Lingual frenotomy using laser technology is a safe and effective treatment option for children and adolescents with functional limitations caused by tongue-tie (ankyloglossia).

Systematic reviews have highlighted the procedure's benefits in improving oral health and overall quality of life. For older children and adolescents, lingual frenotomy can significantly enhance speech articulation and clarity, addressing challenges associated with restricted tongue mobility. Studies consistently show measurable improvements in speech patterns after the procedure, particularly when combined with speech therapy to reinforce correct tongue placement and movement.

Systematic reviews also emphasise the benefits of lingual frenotomy in orthodontic and periodontal health for children and adolescents. A restricted tongue can exert abnormal pressures on the teeth and gums, leading to issues such as spacing, misalignment, or even gum recession. By releasing the frenulum, laser frenotomy can alleviate these pressures, complementing orthodontic treatments and supporting better oral hygiene.

Additionally, simple joys, like licking an ice cream cone, can be challenging because limited tongue mobility makes it hard to reach or manipulate food in specific ways. This difficulty may lead to feelings of frustration or embarrassment, especially in social settings where peers might not face the same struggles.

Currently, there are no high quality scientific reviews  specifically examining the relationship between tongue-tie release and airway issues. However, some studies suggest that tongue mobility improvements following a frenectomy may reduce oral breathing patterns and facilitate better tongue posture, potentially supporting airway function. For children with existing/ diagnosed airway concerns, such as obstructive sleep apnea, tongue-tie release may be considered as part of a broader treatment plan. It is important to note, however, that frenectomy should not be used as a preventive treatment for potential airway issues in children without clear functional impairments. Decisions about the procedure should be based on a thorough assessment of the child's symptoms and needs by a specialist.

Laser lingual frenotomy is a quick and gentle procedure performed under topical and local anaesthetic.

The process is precise and minimally invasive, with little to no bleeding and no need for stitches, thanks to the laser’s ability to seal as it works.

Most children and teens tolerate the procedure well and can return to their normal activities, such as eating and speaking, the same day.

Immediately after the release: Laser technology provides precision in tissue removal, without bleeding or need for stitches.
