Help! My toddler is grinding their teeth.

Is Teeth Grinding in Children Normal?

Teeth grinding in children, also known as "bruxism," is a common behavior, especially in infants and toddlers. It typically begins around 6 months of age when babies' first teeth start coming in. In fact, about 3 out of every 10 children grind or clench their teeth, mostly while sleeping but sometimes during the day, too. This habit is generally a normal part of development and often goes away as children grow.

Bruxism can also run in families. Children with a parent who grinds their teeth are 2.6 times more likely to develop the habit. Other factors that can contribute to teeth grinding include anxiety, misaligned teeth, and even certain medical conditions.

Does Teeth Grinding Cause Damage to Children’s Teeth?

Many parents worry when they hear the sound of their child grinding their teeth, especially at night. Fortunately, in most cases, teeth grinding doesn’t cause any lasting damage to children’s teeth. Paediatric dentists routinely check for signs of wear from grinding, like worn or flattened teeth, small cracks, or chipped enamel. They also check if teeth are properly aligned, as misaligned teeth can sometimes be a reason for grinding.

While most cases of bruxism in children don’t lead to serious issues, prolonged or severe grinding could lead to minor wear and tear, which dentists monitor over time.

How Can You Help Stop Teeth Grinding in Children?

Most children outgrow teeth grinding on their own by the time they’re around six years old, before their permanent teeth come in, so no specific treatment is typically needed. If you suspect your child’s teeth grinding is related to stress or anxiety, consider setting up a soothing bedtime routine, which could help them relax before sleep. Reading a favorite story, listening to calming music, or practicing simple breathing exercises can create a calm environment to reduce stress.

For older children who continue grinding, or if teeth grinding is causing visible wear on their teeth, dentists may recommend a night guard. A night guard is a flexible, thin plastic guard that children wear over their teeth to protect them from further grinding damage. This custom-made device acts as a barrier to keep teeth safe and reduce wear on the enamel.

With regular dental check-ups and proper monitoring, parents can feel confident knowing their child’s teeth grinding can be managed safely and often resolves on its own.
